A ‘Chinese’ Pagoda at Nagapattinam on the Tamil Coast: Revisiting India’s Early Maritime Links
Speaker: Dr. Himanshu Prabha Ray, Chairperson, National Monuments Authority

The Buddhist site of Nagapattinam was a major landmark on the Tamil coast from the 7th to the 19th centuries AD, though today it is known for its sea-borne trade and fishing communities. The town suffered extensive damage during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. This presentation revisits writings on maritime contacts between the Indonesian archipelago and the Tamil coast from 7th to 13th century AD with a view to placing the rich Buddhist heritage of Tamilnadu in context

Chair: Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Chairperson, IIC Asia Project
