The short story is written in the form of letters between two college friends, Salma and Usha. Interestingly, Salma writes and Usha receives. Locating the story in Mussoorie where Salma is brought there by her doting parents to forget her infatuation with Ahmed, a lecturer, leftist, and poor. Two families, neighbours and best friends, Khans and Mathurs, play out a charade of love, loss, histrionics, hypocrisy in an India of the 1950s
