Dharwad-Kirana Khayal Gayaki: The migration and stylistic evolution of a North Indian tradition in the South

Illustrated presentation by  Srivani Jade

The gayaki currently popular as the Kirana gharana, has its roots in present day Uttar Pradesh. Over the last 150 years, it has flourished in the South, centred around the small town of Dharwad in North Karnataka. Like a river gathering various elements in its path across the country, this Khayal tradition has absorbed the richness and diversity of regional music in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and evolved into a style all its own. The speaker will narrate the story of the evolution of her gharana, and demonstrate the stylistic elements of the Dharwad-Kirana gharana

Hindustani classical vocalist, composer and educator, Srivani Jade is a captivating performer, and story-teller of the Dharwad-Kirana tradition of Khayal. She is a Visiting Artist at the University of Washington (Seattle) and is based in Bengaluru
