HISTORY AND HERITAGE: THE AFTERLIFE OF MONUMENTS

WEBINAR

The Afterlives of Jain Monuments in Early Medieval Tamil Nadu

Illustrated lecture by Dr. Lisa N. Owen, Associate Professor and Chair, Dept. of Art History, University of North Texas, USA

Chair: Dr. Srikumar Menon, National Institute of Advanced Study, Bengaluru

Dr. Owen will reframe and expand upon her work on the numerous Jina images that are carved into the rocky landscape around Madurai and at the sites of Kalugumalai and Uttamapalayam. These reliefs – incised into the surfaces of rock in the 9th and 10th centuries – are generally found in association with more ancient rock shelters that served as residences for Jain ascetics. What accounts for the early medieval reuse and transformation of these ancient abodes? What carve images and what purposes did they serve?
